Are you taking census away from your competitors?

Surely, I must be kidding. Right now LTC is one of the most competitive businesses around. As expectations keep growing and the funding keeps dwindling, it’s not an easy equation to make work. As we all know, there are too many SNF beds and not enough money for good staffing. Also, your best customers, the State and Federal Government, demand more quality and do not commit to how they will pay for it. This is truly one heck of a problem.

Since there’s more aging population, more elderly being discharged from hospitals, and more unhealthy people in the world, why is LTC census down? Where are they going? They are going somewhere... but where? What if they came to you first to get well and then went somewhere else? Wouldn’t you take them to fill your empty beds? Sure you would, and in doing so you could increase your bottom line by at least $200,000 per year by just eliminating what is called excess capacity costs. This is what Southwest Airlines does every day by taking customers away from United and American, as they sink further into bankruptcy.

So how will it work? A restorative bed is a less costly and more profitable bed. If the staff gets patients better, morale is raised and they tend to stay with their job, while improving their reliability. Thus, lower turnover and decreased overtime costs. If the families and surveyors see patients get better, they will bless your efforts and tell others. The result is a better image with more referrals and lower vacancy costs. If the investors make good money on quality they will let you run the business while providing more money for raises and incentives.

The best news is that Medicare funds restorative beds and can immediately replace Medicaid as your primary source of new money. That is the most exciting part of this formula. "Learn it, to earn it", because success and census are measured by the quality of life you provide your patients.
